June 14 – Community And The Role It Plays In Healthy Aging

When I was a little kid, my parents knew all of our neighbors, we new all the neighbor kids, and we weren’t afraid to hangout with anyone on the block.

When I visit my wife’s family in Bandung, Indonesia her parents knows all of the neighbors, and the kids know everyone on the block, and they aren’t afraid to hangout with anyone on the block.

So why is it so different here in North America now – what happened?

Well, from my standpoint I think it’s home grown terrorism. Not the terrorism you are thinking – BUT – the terrorism you are watching – YES THE NEWS!

Seriously I really do think the news has terrorized our society.

But why – murders per capita is actually the same as it was when I was born, sixty years ago, as are crimes like forcible rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny-theft, and motor vehicle theft. So if crimes are the same as when I was a child, and I wasn’t fearful to walk down the street at night then what has changed?

Again it all comes back to the news. Just take a minute to think about it. If the news was only allowed to report the crimes in your city, really what would they have to talk about, and if you were Canadian the news would likely be condensed down to a commercial spot.

But they don’t keep news local. They look at news all around the world and they prey on our OMG instinct, so they compile the worst clips they can, and once you’ve watched, it only makes sense to remain a prisoner of your own home.

But what we don’t realize is that when we don’t go out we are losing critical socializing time. YES CRITICAL SOCIALIZING TIME!

Critical because when we socialize our brain is firing on all cylinders and it stays healthy, critical because it reduces stress on our body, critical because we get out and move, and critical because it people that stay socially active live longer.

So turn of that TV it’s killing your brain and worse yet it’s stopping you from getting out of that chair and socializing!

Next week let’s talk about something you want to talk about that is impacting your second fifty!

Thanks and keep smiling!
