June 21 – They Just Don’t Care About People Over Fifty!

Last year I attended an event out in Banff, Alberta, Canada called The Gathering. It was a collection of all the Guru marketing minds of North America. Google was their, CBS, Event Dana White of the UFC was one of the speakers. But none of those people really caught my attention. What caught my attention was a table of Canadian Marketing VP’s and their views of marketing to people in their second fifty.

Bottom line they weren’t – they weren’t interested and they didn’t care. I said, are you kidding me? People over 50 consist of 1/3 of the Canadian population. Same in the US! AND people over 50 control 42% of every available dollar.

They didn’t care. They were focused on marketing to Millennial’s, and no matter what I said, they had their minds made up that it was a waste of time to market to Boomers and beyond.

Now I gotta tell you that pissed me off, and I haven’t voiced one positive word about those companies since I left Banff. Now I didn’t say anything bad about them, and I’m not even going to bad mouth them here. But do they have any idea what they are missing out on! YA the Pot of Gold at the end of the RAINBOW!

They aren’t stupid – they just don’t know what to do or how to say it.

Example:

Alison Sander, who runs the Boston Consulting Group’s Center for Sensing & Mining the Future, said only about 5 percent of her corporate clients really understand the nuances of the senior market — it’s still a gray area for business.

That helps explain why only about 15 percent of advertising dollars are spent on this demographic, despite accounting for almost half of consumer packaged-goods sales, according to Nielsen data.

The article goes on to say that marketers see the 50 plus group as people on the downward slide – ARE THEY NUTS – we are the people that broke all the rules and got stuff done like – women voting, equal pay for women, equality for blacks, gay rights – we are the most progressive demographic ever, and we will even change the way people die!

So that’s one of the reasons I started “Freedom Fifty U”. If we intend to live longer, more vibrant lives, we need to do it ourselves and we to understand the #1 component necessary for longevity. Socialization. We need to get out, and hangout with other like minded, positive, people, and we need to challenge our selves to continue to grow and expand, mentally, emotionally, physically, financially and spiritually.
