BELL PEPPER

Hi Folks! I Hope everyone was in good spirits and enjoyed the Holy-Week celebration.

OK as mentioned last time we will talk about Peppers. Bell pepper or sweet pepper is a cultivar group of the species Capsicum annuum (chilli pepper). Cultivars of the plant produce fruits in different colors, red, yellow and orange. The fruit is also frequently consumed in its unripe form when it is still green. For more information about this fruit visit www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bell_pepper.

Every year I grow Bell peppers in my garden. The plant has more than one use or as we say “Two birds with one stone.” We all know how tasty peppers are, however very few people are aware of just how delicious the leaves are. In Filipino culture we love both fish and chicken soup and I like to use the leaves in my broth, which taste very similar to spinach leaves.

When the fruit is ready for harvest it is excellent in stir fry’s and salads as well salsas.

Many cultures beyond Filipino, like Spanish, Mexican or South American would never consider a shopping list that excluded peppers. As for me, it’s always right here in my back yard.

To grow your pepper plants you will need them to have at least 6 hours of full sunlight. Another amazing aspect to pepper plants is that they are insects free, meaning insects won’t disturb them at all.

Next time when we will talk about Zucchini – so until then keep it growing and keep it green!
