AVOCADOS

Avacado PlantThe first recorded documentation of gardening came from the story of Eden. Now I’m not that old but gardening has always been an important part of my life, for as long as I can remember. Whether it’s a big plot or simply a small container, inside or outside, if we care for our plants they will grow and produce vegetables, spices, herbs, fruits, flowers or simply provide us with esthetic pleasure.

For me gardening is a spiritualistic experience. When I’m in the garden I enjoy praying and it helps me feel closer to God. The clean air, the birds singing and the smell of fresh plants all seem to clarify just how lucky I truly am, to be a part of this wonderful experience we call life and to have this opportunity to share what I love most with all of you here at www.yoursecondfifty.com

For my first article I would like to talk about the Avocados. Now for most of you, once you have harvested the fruit you simply throw away the seeds, well not anymore. To begin with get yourself a 10” diameter by 12” deep pot. Place smaller rocks on the bottom of the pot before you put in the soil which will help for drainage. When you plant the seed keep the pointed tip up and bury it 3 inches down into the soil. Keep the plant in a window with northern exposure. Don’t over or under water your avocado by keeping an eye on its color, when it turns a lighter color it’s thirsty. And before you know it you will have your own pet Avocado plant.

My late Grandfather was a Filipino medicine man and here’s one of his tips on avocados: In ancient times it was common practice to brew an avocado and then simmer the fluid in a sauce pan for 10 minutes, (the color will be turn reddish) what remains is a tea like drink that is excellent for indigestion and diarrhea.

If you want to know more about Avocados go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avocado

Next time when we will talk about Bitter Melon – so until then keep it growing and keep it green!

Clar, what you wrote is true, my congratulations! Imagine the simple tree we call in our country “avocado” has reached the net because of you. Write other articles involving our Filipino plants and trees. There are a lot of them that have been medicinally helpful to us and have remained uncovered. Kudos! - romy mantilla

Great reminder about the healthy avocado! I don’t think
I’ve done the plant since my kids were very small, but now
I will do it again. Looking forward to your next planting
    tip!
