Upgrade Your Leadership Skills in Practice

No matter how big your company or department you’re in charge of is, the fact that you have to work with people towards achieving the set goals remains both one of the greatest challenges and opportunities. There are many factors that influence employees’ performances and most of them are closely related to the company culture and other factors that you can regulate.

Needless to say, there is no universal solution which can be applied in each situation, but a great majority of stories about successful leaders contain some of the aspects of leadership identified by researchers as the crucial ones. So, what is it that makes them more successful and what can you do to hone your skills?

Clear vision

Naturally, it’s impossible to achieve success if your vision and goals are not shared with the team and if each member of the team can’t recognize the benefit of reaching the set goals. Your vision and strategy needs to be clearly communicated to everyone and their genuine belief needs to reflect the fact that they share your vision.

Natural born leaders are passionate

It’s true that a lot can be learned and developed in terms of leadership, but there’s no denying that great leaders are born with that gift. Being realistic about what you can do and setting attainable goals are the core of success, but it is your passion and commitment that will set you apart from others. At no point along the line should you forget to share your enthusiasm with your colleagues and let them know you appreciate their contribution.

Be yourself while being a role model

Great leaders don’t make decisions which are not in agreement with their moral values. Otherwise, they would constantly re-examine and re-evaluate them. Such instances would be seen and interpreted by team members as indecisiveness and lack of integrity, which would in turn diminish their trust and faith in your leadership.

People like leaders who lead by example, who deliver what they promise and whose heart is set on achieving the goals. If they see they have one such person at the helm, they are more likely to follow suit. You need to use this fact and model the qualities you’d like your colleagues to exhibit.

Stay positive

It doesn’t take a genius to recognize that people are generally much more attracted by cheerful and optimistic people than those full of negativity. Highlighting the positive aspects of life and business, while at the same time remaining unshaken by omnipresent negative things is another characteristic shared by most renowned leaders.

Remember, your actions and reactions are constantly in the spotlight and even a slightest sign of hopelessness may damage both your reputation and company culture. If you want your colleagues to follow you, and you do, you need to be aware that not many want to follow someone who only sees doom and gloom.

Appreciate everyone’s effort

You can’t be a great leader if you don’t pay well. Salaries are reflections of your company’s results and your appreciation of the work done by your team members. Apart from regular salaries, there are many other ways you can recognize and reward colleagues. From the increasingly popular and available gift cards, to extra days off, there are so many options to express how much you care about the people you work with.

Again, it might be a good idea to have various options available for them, so that they can choose between, say, being allowed to work from home on some days and getting a bonus. You mustn’t forget that different individuals may have different preferences at a particular stage of their lives. A parent of a young child might relish a day off much more than a financial stimulus, for example.

Motivate and learn

If you play to other people’s strength, you’re much more likely to have a motivated team of people around you. Who knows, there could be another great leader in your team, who needs your support and whose contribution would, by far, surpass the investment in their training.

You’re bound to make mistakes and you shouldn’t be afraid to admit having made them. However, you need to show to everyone that you’ve learned from your mistakes and developed as a professional and a leader. Learning even when you and all those around you believe you’re an expert is vital. By the time you’ve mastered certain skills, some other requirements have emerged or some aspects of your business have changed and only a knowledgeable person can rise up to such challenges.
